The Story Behind the Art: Tree Lights

So much of what I create has a story. A story of how it was made, but more so, the story of why I made it. Wee Wander was such a fun collection of fabric prints to create because it was part of MY story. And I wanted to share that with you today. So gather around. I'll tell you a story:)

I lived on the West Coast until I was 6 when our family moved cross country to the East Coast where they are today. We lived first in Massachusetts and then in Maryland. As a child on the West Coast, I remember loving to climb the peach trees in the back yard, and the orange trees. I dreamed of having strong enough legs and feet to climb palm trees someday.

But when our family picked up and moved into the forests of Massachusetts, I knew I found my home. I remember having to stand in the middle of our street and look straight up into the night in order to see any sky at all. Lightning storms were simply flashes of lit up trees from my paned bedroom window. There were so many trees in my yard that we spent at least 2 hours every Saturday as a family raking. I love my trees. So much, that when my husband and I decided to buy a home in desert and rocky mountain Utah, it took us 15 months to find the right house....nestled in the trees.

When we moved to Maryland when I was 9, the trees were a little farther back from our house. The forrest began just past our property line, and I spent many summers wandering in the woods behind our house. In the hot, humid summers, we'd go outside and chase fireflies. There was so much magic in those cricket chirping, frog groaning summer nights....all lit up by lightning bugs. And when I'd finally go to bed at night, I'd look out my window at the forest across the pond, and see the trees literally all lit up from the fireflies. I can still feel the thrill of that scene. It was like fairies, and the trees would wink at me all night....I still marvel at how magical that was. Sometimes we'd sleep outside on the trampoline and I'd watch shooting stars and fireflies in the trees as I'd close my eyes.

So when I knew I wanted to design a collection of children wandering through summer days and nights, I knew I had to illustrate the fireflies in the trees. And children in the trees. That was my childhood.

The best part of debuting this collection has been hearing YOUR stories. When we were at Quilt Market, so many people would stop in the isle and gasp and say, "That was MY childhood! Oh my gosh....summer nights in Illinois were so magical...." and their stories would go on and on. It was so thrilling to see people get nostalgic for their childhood memories outdoors on those hot summer nights.

The real magic is taking a feeling, putting it in print, and watching someone else share that same feeling in their own way.

I just feel honored.

WEE WANDER BLOG TOUR: X-Large Floor Pillows

PILLOW-TUTORIAL.jpg

Hello and Happy Wednesday!

I've got a wonderful new tutorial for you on how to use the Wee Wander Fabric.

Two FREE TUTORIALS for x-large floor pillows. One round, and the other square.

IMG_0787-7.jpg

Since Wee Wander has some pieces with lovely "landscapes" I knew I wanted to create something that showed off the tapestry of illustrations so children could get the full effect

IMG_0811-9.jpg

These pillows are big! Think Doggy Pillows. We originally designed them to fit perfectly underneath a child's Tee Pee. We purchased custom Teepee's from Tnee's Tpee's for our Quilt Market Booth.

IMG_9059-1.jpg

Anders was only 2 months old, and no strollers or carseats were allowed on the Tradeshow floor. Only Babies in arms. I knew I couldn't hold him for 8 hours straight, 3 days in a row, so we designed the booth to have these awesome pillows in the Tee Pees so he could sleep in them. Most people thought he was a prop! It was pretty adorable:) And my arms were super happy too! And now I have these awesome pillows for the bigger kids to snuggle on. I love them!

Carissa at Carissa Miss designed the pillows: two pieces of Wee Wander for the pillow and the piping, 1 piece of coordinating Michael Miller Cotton Couture Solid fabric for the sides, and a hidden zipper along the bottom edge. You'll love these!

Head on over to CARISSAMISS's blog for the full tutorial.

Thanks Carissa for such a great project!

Happy sewing!

Wee Wander Blog Tour: Twin Quilt Pattern

lattice-quilt-image-web1.jpg

The projects are rolling in for the Wee Wander Blog Tour, and I'm so excited to share this twin quilt tutorial.

This is a super great FAT QUARTER project, that uses a single fat quarter stack of all my Wee Wander Prints. Emily Carr of Simple Girl Simple Life put this tutorial together, and you can see it here.

I love this quilt, and how all the prints go so well together. We even used the border print and it makes for such a magical, simple quilt!

Ella has this on her bed, and she loves to stare at all the pictures every night. It's SO hard it seems to get a decent picture of a large quilt! I've not yet mastered that!

Here is a collection of the fabrics so you can get a closer look:

Wee Wander Firefly Border Quilt

With the WEE WANDER fabric collection hitting stores this week, I'm so excited to start the Wee Wander Blog Tour!

Each Tuesday, I'll be featuring a FREE pattern and/or tutorial for you to create your very own Wee Wander inspired project.

Some of the projects are from my Quilt Market Booth. And some projects are completely new!

For our very first project, I'm featuring the Wee Wander Firefly Border Quilt. Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter put this pattern together with me. I just love the small patchwork around this nighttime scene. This border print, like my other border prints, runs along the selvedge, with a mirror image on the other side with a big tall night sky between! There is so much to work with this print! If you look closely, you can see how I embroidered a little bit around some of the stars.

Here's an example of what the print looks like selvedge to selvedge so you can see how it works. I love that is leaves so much of the sky so you can really use large sections of it!

The full PDF Pattern is available below:

Have fun! And as always, I love to see your projects! Please feel free to share them on my PINTEREST BOARD and send an email to info@sarahjanestudios.com to receive an invite to post! Happy Sewing!

More Patterns and tutorials are coming weekly! Dresses, decor, quilts....stay tuned!

Wee Wander is coming

Quilt Market Fall 2013

I've been home from Quilt Market for over 2 weeks now, which is what it normally takes to just put my suitcase away! So much goes into the prep, that when I come home, jumping right back in again is nuts! IMG_9056-1QuiltMarketSarah_Anders

Wee Wander is my debut collection this year, and I couldn't be more pleased. The booth turned out great, and we pulled together another fast round up of goods! I think I had the fabric for maybe 7 days total (whew!!), and I just have to say that I had such an amazing group of mostly local sewers who banded together to make this all happen in time. (See bottom of the post for a list of all products and goods!)

Don't you just wan to squish him???

Tons of color! And thanks to my amazing husband (and dear friend Macy!! who drove 3 hours just to help set up) so that I could care for Anders. (He wasn't allowed in the convention center during set up, so I'm super grateful for so much help!) I did the finishing touches, and Kenneth did all the hard labor. Go team.

IMG_9071-1

My husband and I are both very rooted in theater (we both studied musical theater in college) so there is something about putting on a "show" that we both just love. I also love it for the soul reason of really getting to stand back and get the whole big picture. I get so close to my work, and seeing it all like this is always really inspiring and get so excited to share it with you!  It's like putting on a play with textile design!

IMG_3534 2

This was the first year that they've allowed babies in arms at Quilt Market. Anna Maria and I had to make sure we documented the event. I think Mary Anna and Anders were the only Booth Babies at the show, which made for great friendly conversation for 3 days straight. I could have had the most boring booth on the floor and I think people would have still wanted to hang out the entire time cause of this cherub.

IMG_3532 2

I love that these two manly men managed so much of baby duty so that we could do our thing at Market. Go Husbands!

IMG_3540 2

Anyways...these two are set for life. Right?

IMG_3528 2

Anders even had coordinating outfits the whole weekend. Model Baby. Starting him young.

IMG_9048-1IMG_3531 2

My husband had to leave after the 1st day of the show, so I had 2 days of me and baby....on the floor....the whole time. My left bicep is so ripped!  But we set up the booth so that we could set the baby down and let him sleep and give my arms a break since no carriers, strollers or baby paraphernalia of any kind was allowed on the floor. I loved watching people walk by the booth, thinking he was a doll, only to see him breathe and just shriek in delight (he woke up from those shrieks a few times:) He was quite the hit.

I couldn't snap pics of all my dear friends, but here's Liesl of Oliver & S, Deborah of Whipstitch, Marisa from Creative Thursday, Vanessa of V and Co, Camille of Thimbleblossoms,Kerry of Kid Giddy and the ladies of my favorite fabric boutique in my home town. Thanks to so many of you who stopped by!

Seeing good friends that I've made over the years in the industry is always a treat. Being a work-at-home-mom-with-4-kids-and-a-husband means that I don't socialize very much. So, taking the time to reconnect is so rejuvenating for me. Especially after my 9 months of yucky bed rest pregnancy. Must have girl time!

And thanks for all your overwhelming response on the fabric line! I can't WAIT to show you more, get projects going on the blog, and share ideas!

Introducing: Wee Wander

Stores carrying Sarah Jane Fabric

Ta Da!!

It's here! My 4th (and favorite so far!) fabric collection that will be shipping to stores in January 2014 with Michael Miller Fabrics! I have so much I want to share about this collection, it's hard to put as much as I want to in one post. But let's have a go at it.....

IMG_9021-1

Creating a fabric collection is like putting together a puzzle from your soul. I have a feeling or a set of colors and images, and I want to tell a story with it...one that resonates on multiple levels. I think about the child, and their interpretation of the illustration. I think about the quilter, and needing to cut up fabric freely. I think about the apparel sewer, and needing something that works on a large surface. I think about the mom who is going to redecorate their child's space and needs lots of inspiration and lots of pieces to make her space work. I think about what colors are trending, but that also tell my story authentically. And so many more questions. But like I said, it all starts from a feeling and this collection comes from my own childhood memories of playing outside and wandering through the meadows and woods behind my house, with the only curfew being supper time. Wandering without boundaries. Daydreaming without having to be reeled in. Staying up past dark on summer nights to catch fireflies. And watch the twinkling trees in the distance.

Wee Wander:  It's a play on words. It's a "little" wander, or let's all go on a wander.

closeups

All these feelings and images are part of my childhood, and it was so magical to recreate that into a collection of fabric that I think resonates with every child. A sense of wonder, wander and whimsicality that we all (I hope) still recall those carefree days of childhood.

IMG_9205-1

The collection comes in 2 color ways, Sunrise & Twilight with 21 pieces total....including, as always, a super whimsical and magical border print. All the colors reflect both the vibrancy of outdoor play as well as the softness of innocent childhood. I love this collection because it can cross over both ways: bright and soft.

Wee Wander will be shipping in January, so I'll be featuring lots of projects starting closer to when it will be in stores. So, I get to trickle lots in over a long while! I'll be giving you free quilt patterns, free clothing patterns and embroidery patterns to match! I'm itching to get my hands working on this. And I can't wait to see what you create with it!

This fabric is available through Michael Miller Fabrics.

2014 Calendar

IMG_9196-1-2

I'm so excited to introduce to you a new calendar for this upcoming year! I've had flip calendars in the past that I know you all have loved. But I thought I'd try something new, and offer a wall calendar to be up for the whole year.

And if you can see....it coordinates with my newest fabric line that I still have yet to show you:) I'm trickling in little hints....and the wild horses are my favorite. Horses are a mild obsession with my girls. Ok, border-line crazy obsession. Ella pretends to be a horse most of the day actually. Truth.

These calendars would make lovely gifts as well. Can you believe it's already November? Where does time go?
