oil love.

We are in the middle of it all at the moment…moving I mean…and though I love the idea of being out, I am not loving the idea of living with boxes and junk everywhere. I do love that I have been able to uncover some things that I have had to put away for a while. My oil paints. After Addie started walking, I realized that I would have to find another way of making merry…thus my present photoshop addiction. But it is in oils that I first started my painting adventures. Sure, drawing is always first. But I was lucky enough to start private art lessons at the age of 10, and after one painting in acrylic, my teacher let me switch over to oils, and I have been hooked ever since. The smell, the feel, the sheen…oil paint is honestly sacred to me:)

I haven’t painted since 3 years ago today when I finished my first and last portrait painting. It was a Christmas present for my husband. I can still remember Addie crawling at my feet while I painted this!

I think that this other painting was also done that same month, my last landscape painting since the day I put my paints away.

And today, when I pulled out my paints from storage, I was wishing I could get my hands dirty again. Messy and DIRTY. Someday! Small space living allows room for the most important things…and someday, this will be important again. But right now, I would rather have my babies crawling at my feet…but oh, the smell of these tubes did give my heart a flutter!

I know the feeling! When I teach my art classes I pull out old stuff I have done for examples of how to do this or that. The students always say- did you just do this? The answer is always the same- I did this a long time ago. Hmmmm… someday!

  • You absolutely MUST pull out the paints again! You can’t let such talent go to waste! The portrait is amazing! You can see how much your daughter looks like her dad in that painting!

  • When I grow up I want to be an artist. :)

  • Ah, I’m there with you! My husband thinks I’m crazy for how much I love oils. I’ve sadly succumbed to prisma markers and photoshop as well. It’s just not the same when you’ve got a little ones hands grabbing at everything :)

wow. you’re even more awesome than i thought!

  • Bea-u-ti-ful paintings! Yes, it is great to have the babies crawling at your feet isn’t it, hehe? And when you are able to pull those paints out again…it’ll be all the more special! You are very talented!

  • wow….those are both so beautiful! I love seeing a different side of your art.

  • SARAH! the portrait of your husband is … amazing. ohhh my gosh. it is beautiful & i am in total awe.

my 1st & last people portrait was of my 2 boys – 4 years ago. we have it framed on the mantle (18×24) but guess what? we’ve added a little girl to the mix. so guess what i feel extreme guilt over? … the fact that she’s not over the fireplace. {word to the wise… save painting a 18×24 portrait of your children until you’ve declared yourselves “DONE”} i attempted to do a large portrait of all 3 … i started it 15 months ago. it’s so tough to find the time. you have to work when you have the time – but it has to be a HUGE CHUNK OF TIME. not quick 20 minute increments. it’s near impossible. :) but it’s those same 3 i’m trying to paint that are keeping me from painting it. :) so it’s hard to complain. ha! i wish i had it in me to finish it for my husband for christmas… hmmmm …maybe father’s day ‘09. :)

sarah – you’re an incredible artist. not that we don’t see that everyday in your illustrations, but i, for one, LOVED seeing your oil paintings. THANK YOU FOR SHARING! and good luck with the move & all!
